few cars and lack of spares
few cars and lack of spares
No wonder so few of these get restored.... there are hardly any second hand parts on the market unless you want to be bent over by Jimmys and prices of new parts are very high..... a much more expensive proposition to restore or work on than the FBs are.

Re: few cars and lack of spares
I have managed to get a few from USA, the are usually to drop the price because of the import duty, is there something in particular or just generally?

Re: few cars and lack of spares
both really... the bottoms of the front wings are holed and it's easier just to bolt on a couple of decent 2nd hand wings..... if only such things for sale existed!
Parts from RockAuto are comparable on price to the FB stuff but they mainly sell consumable parts, not body panels or trim.
The brake discs on this car are all just about borderline but new discs are eye wateringly expensive compared to FB discs or even discs for my GTI...... I'll have to find somewhere that can skim them I think.... even that seems to be a dying art unless you want them skimmed on the car

The old fashioned garages and engineering shops are fading away.

Re: few cars and lack of spares
Sadly, garages have lost the ability to diagnose faults unless done via the OBD, in effect they have become fitters, I bet there are thousands of cars that are scrapped through some minor fault that cannot be found via "Plug In" that is a easy fix yet would cost hundreds off £s of man hours & parts being replaced until the fault disappears.
I have just bought a set of warning lights/clock from the USA (not 13Betc) & they reduced it by 33% when asked
I will keep my eyes peeled when searching

Re: few cars and lack of spares
Did he even charge us for the last ones though ? Im sure if you said you needed them quick he'd rattle em off.ian65 wrote: ↑Sun Feb 25, 2018 5:22 pmI thought about him Keith, you got me some done there before.....did a great job but it took him foreverand I need this car fixing up asap. I do have a spare set from the TII I stripped about 3 years back... I might drop them around to him... he can take as long as he likes with them!
My lathe is set up at home but believe it or not discs can be awkward to get right, I don't fancy practicing on yours

Re: few cars and lack of spares
no, I don't think he did charge us
... I might call in an ask him... what was his real name again? I wouldn't fancy skimming discs either... presumably discs on the same axle need to be spot on identical?
