Suspension/brake noise diagnosis help.

Post by daily rotor » Sun Feb 05, 2017 2:58 am

Hey guys a series 1 running series 3 suspension/running gear.
Was until recently running 185/65 on 14 x 6 rims diametre 23.5``
recently changed to 16 x 7 rims with 195/45 front 215/40 rear. 22.9`` front 22.8`` rear diametre
roughly dropping it a 1/4 inch in height.
first thing in the morning now there can be sounds of suspension binding turning out of my tight parking space.
and now a more annoying clink has developed.
sounds to be coming from right front strut.
makes the clink when going over pot hole or bump
under power or rolling. and also upon fast use of the brakes (nose dipping down)
and can make same noise upon brake release.
i double checked the caliphers were nice and snug (no loose bolts or play)
which leads me to believe its in the strut mount.
strut mount plate?
ball joint?
shock absorber? (Passes the bounce test)
lower control arm bushing?
torsion rod bushing?
when not going over a bump it drives fine.
anyone else been here?

finally found the annoying source of noise.
it was the upper brake calipher guide, slight play around guide.
difficult to find by myself,
simple when i had someone step on brake while i was under car spinning wheel
so my solution was a little excessive.
get PAC Performance 11.5``VT Commodore twin piston set up :)
p.s noise gone

Looks the business 8-) Do you still have S1 PCD (4x110) or S3 (4x114.3)?

im running the 4 stud 114.3 it has the black centre the wilwood 4 pot brakes r on.
with the VT Commodore 2 pot pistons. my brake pads r black in colour being the only visual
difference, plus braided brake line.
im about to turn my attention to the rear S3 disc brake set up.
they have barely used any brake pad in 3 years
handbrake works fine
about 2 years ago i had rear caliphers off and noted how hard to turn
brake piston without tool. was near impossible to turn
have the rear brake rebuild kit
im sure these 33y.o caliphers r due to be kitted.
suggestions for tools to easily wind that piston in and out please???
got some new fat pads for it.
new rear discs im gonna get cross drilled in same pattern as on front
maybe a curving row of 3 due to smaller disc rotor size.
and finally replace the 3 rubber brake hoses with braided as well.
will make a final call on master cylinder bore size after that work is completed.
going from the S3 front single piston(was a really hard pedal)
to the VT dual piston was a noticeable softening of the pedal.
car pulls up great.
and many drives later i dont even notice it anymore.
but in back of my mind of i wouldnt mind adding 2mm in M/C bore size
as part of a rebuild for M/C so brake system is right for another 5 years
