Strange 13b

Postby myatt1972 » Sun Sep 10, 2017 8:37 pm

A few years ago a friend of mine said he'd seen what he thought was a rotary engine in a workshop he was clearing out, it was in the scrap pile and he asked me if I wanted it, obviously I said yes and he dropped it off for me. I assumed it was a dud but Ive oiled it and turned it over regularly. As you may have read I recently bought another rebuilt 13b and have started looking more closely at the engine I was given and it seems a bit odd.

This is the engine, you can see the mounting bolts on the centre plate.

This is the other side of the engine with mounting bolts on the centre plate not the sump as normal.

The engine had a flex plate for an auto box and an odd cast exhaust manifold.

After speaking to Pip at wgt he said it was possibly from a Mazda Parkway bus (I didn't know such a thing existed).

looks like my 12A 6PI but 13B version. I'd guess its from an HB series Luce/Cosmo. I don't know much about the mazda parkway bus but I think it would be more likely from a cosmo/luce, as I know an importer bought a batch of these types of engine to europe at some point.

Also a quick google of the parkway bus it was made from 1974 to 1977, which pre dates the 6 port intake system. I think the 6 port intake was introduced in 1982.

I believe that's the JDM version of the GSL-SE powerplant. Less emissions stuff on the JDM version apparently.

The American forces used to bring over cars, maybe it could have came in that way, a very interesting thread though.

It would think it is from a cosmo with the centre plate mount. Similar to the GSLSE engine but JDM version. As I said, I'm pretty sure a load of JDM engines were bought to Europe at one point, as there are a few 12A 6PIs around, like mine.
