Sticky the Rally Car

Post by DB RX63 » Mon Mar 04, 2013 10:10 pm

Ok, some of you know a little about what I am up to with my recent project.

I bought Jumbo, a Blue S3 to replace my silver S2 that was stolen, which I had intended to prepare for sprints, hillclimbs and the like.

I was planning to convert Jumbo on a rolling basis, bit by bit. I need a decent exhaust that would suit once I had modified the engine, so I contacted WGT Auto developments and spoke to Pip. Once I had explained what I wanted the exhaust for he asked me if I was interested in buying an FB shell, which at the time, I wasn't.

Well, I wasn't until I found out that the shell was stripped, and had already been fitted with a Custom Cages multi point roll cage, added to that a Bridgeported 12A built by Pip, light flywheel, AP Twin plate clutch, modified comp disi, Weber 48 IDA carb & manifold etc, with a semi close ratio gearbox (mixed MX5 and RX7 ratios), and a brand new torsen LSD and 4.9 cwp, ally radiator, lightened doors, new TCA's, partly complete console with FIA master switch as well as a huge amount of spares from the shell and a donor car.

I was sold ! Pip and I agreed a deal which included an engine refresh and I arranged to travel up to Cheshire to collect the car one Saturday.

In the meantime, as my garage is just not big enough, I ordered and built a lean-to carport, so at least i could work under some cover.

Two days after the car port was installed, I collected the car.

Pip had kindly turned the car into a rolling shell to make it easy to transport.

The first job was to remove the struts, axle and steering gear. This was made doubley easy by Pip having coated all threads in copperslip...

It quickly became clear that welding the chassis would be a nightmare without getting to the underneath of the car.

I managed to find a company that could supply a rollover spit for a sensible price that would enable me to get the car at any angle needed to seam weld the shell.

Brackets fit to the bumper mounts and the car can then be turned through 360 degrees and held whereever needed.

With this set up, we can begin to seam weld the chassis.
