Air-con in a 1st gen

Post by ian65 » Fri Aug 24, 2012 9:51 pm

I've got the complete ac setup off the JDM 12at that Tool broke for spares and I'm going to put it into my silver S3.
When we stripped it off the car, it was still pressurised so was obviously leak free however the condensor ( the cooling rad that sits in front of the main radiator) is a bit fragile... some of the fins are dropping out from between the channels... it works but has seen better days to be honest.
New ones for a FB are seriously expensive. Do anyone know anything about ac on cars?
Is there any reason why I couldn't use a condensor off another car? , say this one off a MX5....

apart from the obvious mounting and piping issues, is there any reason why this wouldn't work with my system?
A condensing rad is just a condensing rad isn't it? As long as the capacity it much the same as the one I'm replacing, is there any reason why it shouldn't work?
Any ideas?

all i can say is if the rads look pretty similar is to give it a go.
i had the 12j? system on my mx3 import, the autozam az3.

i got it re-gassed but the original 12j was now banned, so the guys used the 13 stuff i think its now called,
which destroys the seals but not the o-zone layer as much...as the stuff used in old fridges.

it lasted about half a year then it leaked, had ice cold a/c then nothing one day. got it re-gassed but it went the next day :(

therefore seals had gone maybe in the pump, i never got it fixed as had the a/c in the rx8, plus its never sunny in the UK that much

i'd give it a go ian and see as i'm sure a series 1 mx-5 is not that much older than the last series 3 fb and mazda could have used a similar design.

cheers Ronnie,

I'm going to change the seals anyway when I put it all back together..... as you say, I suppose the best way to find out is to try it.

well looking at your pic, if i remember the air con rad in my mx3, it looks pretty similar.
you know, that shape and size sitting behind your engine radiator.

all i have to do is get my pump seals re-sealed, maybe some in the pipes too with seals that handle the new coolant.
otherwise they'll rot and your coolant leaks, i'd say the a/c in the fb you got off tool's old car will be using the same seals as my 92 mx3,
so you'll need them changed.

Not something I know a lot about, but the system is filled to a set weight, so I would guess the rad would need to be the same capacity...

The newer R134 (or whatever) is all you can get now, so you will need to make a few changes to make it work on an older system I believe?

Ian

As you know, I am looking at the same kind of project. I was speaking with Tim from RX Motors at Eurotrip and he said the same thing... if it fits in the right place then any condensor will work... MX5, FC are probably easy to find as well.

that's good news then Dave..... a mx5 condensor is definitely easier to get hold of 0-0

I may have a question or two for you then. I'm slowly acquiring bits and bobs for an A/C setup. Finally managed to find a RHD eveaporator casing .... a very elusive animal indeed and currently still residing in SA of all places!
