Antifreeze Change Today.

Hi Guys,
Changed antifreeze today. This came out. Good Old Bluecol.
(Been in there since May 2013).

Some more details....very basic info but might help someone.

A cut bottle taped on helps flushing with hot water from a bucket.

And don't forget the heater control lever should be over to 'Hot' to allow the heater to drain as well.

Old Hoses off, New hoses on. Old ones still seem fine after 31 years!

Sorry Ian, Clips were still good and I couldn't bear to discard them.

After refilling with new Bluecol @ 40 to 50 % mix, time to start up and let it tick over for a minute or so. Watch like a hawk for any leaks and keep topping up the header tank....squidge the hoses.
Obviously watch out if things get too hot.....done carefully there's next to no temperature in the system at this point.

Then it's stuff in the boot for the first trip.....Only do a mile or so then check for air locks, again squidging both top and bottom hoses to drive air out of top of rad. Repeat checks after 3 or 4 miles, then maybe again at a dozen miles or so.

A record of all servicing.....what job, when and miles. Helps enormously a couple of years later.

This is the stuff.......and don't forget the expansion bottle.....up to 'Full' with fresh stuff before you test drive.
And tomorrow when it's all cooled down I'll recheck levels thoroughly.

Good stuff! I've been using it since I got my car as you guys rated it highly. I drained about 5L from my car a few weeks ago while I was doing some stuff and it came out looking fresh as ever! :D It had been in for nearly 2 years.. I did just pour it back in once I was finished haha

Amazing how clean it was :o Mine always seems to dirty get dirty quickly. I flush out with radflush etc.
I have even tried dishwasher tablets ( :idea: ) but always the same. I keep getting brown sediment in the bottom of expansion tank. I think it is a buy product of some electro chemical reaction as it is similar to that created in hydrogen generators.

Do you think there's a link to very low mileage Pete. 'Gus' doesn't go more than 200 or 300 miles a year these days?
I can't see why mileage should affect antifreeze.

I bought an engine from Tool before Christmas and hopefully it will be going into the car in the next month.
Looking at the posts most of you recommend Bluecol anti freeze.
I was wondering whether any of you have tried one of the waterless antifreezes.
I know it is expensive but presumably less corrosion?

Also there seems to be conflicting views on the engine oil . When I bought the car and had it recommissioned I think I used Duckhams but I now see from earlier posts Tool recommends Castrol GTX mineral oil. Does it make any difference if I am running an Elford turbo? I would appreciate your comments .

Ian looked at that one, best to ask him about the corrosion, he did think it was over valued.

I would personally run good quality synthetic oil in a turbo, there has been a lot of people running synthetics in rotary engine cars for decades, and the oil is much better, most racers and specialists recommend it, and mazda recommend synthetics and ran synthetic in their factory race cars. The need for mineral oil is essentially a myth, but mineral oil does the job fine if you would like to run that in the engine, but mineral oil in a turbo isn't a great idea at all.
