Re: carb problem or compression problem?

Yes, I remember that from my S4 Turbo. I referred to it as "disabling the self destruct features" of an undersized wastegate that leads to boost spikes and an ecu that cut fuel under overboost conditions. I ported the wastegate orifice and used a turbo Porsche exhaust valve as the new door...

Re: carb problem or compression problem?

https://i.imgur.com/WL7iUFr.jpg According to mazdatrix it's emissions junk designed to lean the mixture under deceleration. They also claim it gets stuck and leads to lots of carb rebuilds? I'm tempted to remove it seeing as how it's right there in the air stream and can't be doing much for flow......

Re: carb problem or compression problem?

So I pulled the carb off and I have two questions... What's the deal with the little vacuum pot operated butterfly in the #2 rotor primary runner?

More importantly should I replace the coolant seals in the intake manifold while I have the carb off? It's an '84 GSL.

Thanks!

Re: Torque arm suspension

TOOL: that's a very cool link. Oh the money I could spend on this car... Unfortunately budgets are tight right now with commodities prices this low so I have to make do with FC and mustang parts. Lucky: while it looks similar the function is very different. The link in the picture actually has a sli...

Re: carb problem or compression problem?

Thanks, I think I'll go for it. Maybe somebody with a SA or an RX3 will take everything!

Re: Torque arm suspension

I'm not sure that I entirely agree. The upper links as they are seem to be a packaging compromise and the more you lower the car the more compromised they become. The big job of the upper links in a parallel 4 link is to control rotation of the axle housing and the longer they are the more effective...

Torque arm suspension

Has anybody seen a FB using a torque arm suspension system for the rear axle? The V8 swap guru at Granny's speed shop sells one and I had always considered it more of a drag racing system. The only OEM application I'm aware of is the 1980s Camaro, which was notorious for its poor handing and nasty a...

Re: rear subframe questions

Hi Jon, my car is in a similar condition. I think that building a subframe may be an idea if you plan on completely redesigning the rear suspension for improved geometry but keep in mind you still have to tie that in to the unibody, which has no provisions for this. That's going to mean a lot of wel...

Re: carb problem or compression problem?

Diagnosis spot on! Strong, even chuffs. I fixed the dodgy fuel pump wiring and ran a couple cans of carb cleaner through the carb which seems to have made things worse. The rear float does move up and down as evidenced by using my phone's camera as an inspection mirror, but it seems the needle isn't...

Re: rust repairs

I'm thinking that the rockers as they are won't be in the picture for long anyway. I'll likely chop them out, weld in some thin DOM round tube and tie that into another piece that will mount the lower links. It'll also run close enough to tie into the cage which should make things very rigid. Then t...
